Do you know what Iftar is?  It’s the traditional Breaking of the Fast – the celebration during Ramadan, the holiest of days for our neighbors who follow the teachings of Islam.  Muslims worldwide celebrate this to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief.  This year the holy month of Ramadan is from May 27 to June 24, 2017.

Gender, Sexuality and Faith

Tuesdays, May 23, 30 and June 6
7:30-9:00 PM in the LPC Main Office
All LPC High Schoolers* and Adults welcome

The Rev. Rosemarie Newberry will lead our class on May 23, introducing us to the spectrum of gender identity, expression, and biology. Taking time to get educated about gender will cause us to be more inclusive and effective leaders in our church and communities. The next two classes will focus on the book, “The Bible’s YES to Same Sex Marriage: An Evangelical’s Change of Heart,” by Marc Achtemeier. Susan Guhse will facilitate our week 2 discussion. On the final class Pastor Diane will walk us through the six passages in the Bible that have been used to shun and demonize sexual and gender identities. This will help to explain why there have been divisions in our denomination and country on this issue. You will walk away from these classes with an increased vocabulary, deeper awe for the human creature, and compassion for all types of people and families.

“Unlike a maze, one cannot get lost in a labyrinth. As we walk the path, at times it seems we are nearing the center, when suddenly the path turns a corner and we end up on the far edges. It provides an allegory for the “wilderness” of life, with the Good News that Easter proclaims: no division, no sin, and not even death can take us out of God’s hands,” notes LPC Pastor Diane Ford.

Confession of BelharThe Belhar Confession is a Christian statement of belief written in Afrikaans in 1982. According to the confession, God is the God of the destitute, the poor, and the wronged, and for this reason the church should stand by people in any form of suffering. It declares that individual, racial and social segregation is sin, and that all forms of segregation always lead to enmity and hatred.
